The mistake most of us make in the kitchen is working harder, not smarter.
We spend time scrubbing, reheating, rewashing, and repeating tasks because we don’t fix the real problem – inefficient habits.
The cost shows up in wasted food, longer cleanup, and extra time we could be using on stuff that matters.

So, what’s the alternative? A handful of clever kitchen hacks that save time and money without extra effort.
These are the ones I use again and again – just simple tweaks that make everyday cooking actually easier and keeps your groceries working for you.

These aren’t gimmicks – they’re practical fixes that save time and cut grocery your waste.

1. Ripen Avocados
The fastest way is to place it in a paper bag with a banana on top of the fridge for a day. This will help the next time there are only green bananas when you go grocery shopping.

2. Fresher Bananas
You can keep bananas for 4 – 5 days longer by wrapping the stems in plastic wrap.

3. Iced Coffee
Freezing your leftover coffee is an easy hack using an ice cube tray because ice cubes made with coffee in Iced Coffee Drinks will keep it from getting watered down which is my biggest pet peeve.
Hint: This is also a great way to preserve your fresh herbs this is helpful when it comes to food prep.

4. No More Fish Sticking To Grill
By grilling your fish on top of lemons or any citrus fruits sliced up you won’t have fish sticking to the grill and it will give it a great lemon/citrus flavor, who doesn’t like extra flavor?
Plus grilling is always better than baking – from cleanup to taste every time. You can also use lemons for any kitchen odors you might have lingering.

5. Keep Potatoes From Budding
While being stored you can keep your potatoes from budding by putting an apple in the bag or in their storage area.
To keep your potatoes from browning after they have been cut you can mix water and white vinegar in a bowl with the potatoes.

6. Cook Burgers Evenly Every Time
By putting a thumbprint in the middle of your burgers before cooking, you can make sure they cook more evenly.
Add a little soy sauce to your ground beef next time you make burgers, the flavor it adds makes them super yummy.
7. Never Boil Over
Laying a wooden utensil like a wooden spoon over a boiling pot is a great way to keep the boiling water from overflowing your pan.
Pro tip: Set your counter up for success – keep measuring tools, peelers, and your favorite pans where you actually use them. Disorganization costs minutes every time you cook.

8. Quick Leftover Snacks
This is a genius hack to fight food waste.
The cost of letting leftovers rot is real. Reusing them this way turns potential trash into instant meals with zero waste.
Leftover taco meat and cheese, spaghetti sauce, chili, even eggs and bacon, or almost any fresh food can be portioned out and put in tortillas, rolled up, and frozen individually in plastic wrap, a mason jar, or freezer bags to save you money instead of letting it go to waste.
Then just pop them individually in the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute and you have a snack or lunch, or even breakfast. This is my secret weapon for meal prep (my kids LOVED this!)

9. Perfect Golden Hashbrowns Every Time
I could never brown hashbrowns correctly – they stuck, they burned, it was always a disaster.
Someone told me once that the easy way to cook them was to use a waffle iron and it worked like a charm to brown both sides perfectly I can’t believe this is a real thing! – image via Rachael Ray

10. No More Dried Out Or Soggy Microwave Food
Put a couple of drops or just a little water on your leftovers and cover them (I use a bowl when heating a plateful of food, making sure to cover all of the food), place them in the microwave for 1 minute on high.
When you remove the cover (carefully as there will be steam) you’ll have perfectly heated and moist leftovers ready to eat!
I do mean carefully as a burn from the steam straight out of the microwave hurts a heck of a lot. Being patient and taking your time cooking and removing food from the microwave keeps you safe, and safety in the kitchen is key.
If many of these feel like things you wish you knew sooner, that’s because most of us never learned them growing up. This list cuts months of trial and error down to minutes.
Quick kitchen tricks only go so far when there’s no repeatable meal plan behind them. Without a plan, spending creeps in from extra ingredients and last minute store runs, that’s why the Meal Planning Planner focuses on meals that actually get used.

I wet a napkin or papertowel and cover food that is in the microwave – keeps it nice and moist and prevents things from popping all over the inside of the microwave!!

Becky,
Great tip! I drop a few drops of water on a plate of leftovers and cover it with a bowl and put it in for 1 minute – in my microwave that makes it perfect, moist and perfectly heated.
Thanks!

When reheating left overs I take a paper towel and wet it, ring it out then cover the plate of food with it and it steams the plate of food.

Got and ulcer and can’t eat red sauce, add sugar. Kills the acid.
Want to clean a non stick, add baking soda to the soap. No scratches.
Baking soda also cleans grease out of plastic,.

Make hard cooked eggs in 30 minutes in your steamer, they peel perfect everytime, no sulfur smell, and they dont get that grey ring around the yolk. When boiling hard water, add a drop of vinegar to the water to keep from getting that white film, when boiled. Keep celery fresh longer by wrapping in aluminum foil.

Kimberlee,
Thanks – Great tips!
