Susan my friend wanted to share another great recipe this week! This one is a bit of a comfort food and a healthy but, frugal meal for a large family, too.
Susan and I both have 4 kids, she has 3 girls and a boy and I have 3 boys and a girl. Our DD and her youngest DD were BFF’s growing up (her youngest girl is Emily from 52 Mantels who does some crafting in the Holiday season for us here.)
Crock Pot Shepherd’s Pie Recipe
My kids – the boys really, were bottomless pits EXCEPT when I made the classic recipe: Shepherd’s meat Pie. The potato topping is what I think filled them up so well.
But, with the veggies added to it, it is healthy. You can also replace the potatoes with mashed cauliflower, if you prefer. This 1 pot easy recipe and meal is perfect for the entire family.
I love to use my Crock Pot and with kids it’s super simple and a whole lot less work in the evening and the smells that fill the air all day make your house smell amazing!
I decided to cook something I haven’t cooked since my kids were little. Crock Pot Shepherd’s Pie!
I found this Goya Seasoning the other day at TJ Maxx for $2.29. It is basically just a Mexican seasoning with garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, salt, oregano, parsley and MSG.
It is such a good complete little seasoning and I also used it in my navy beans yesterday. Yum! I normally use Tony Chacheres but I think I have found a new all-around seasoning. Don’t you just love TJMaxx?
I received the Jalapeño Powder recently from a friend and have yet to use it until tonight. It wasn’t really hot and I would like to try it on something alone to really get a good taste of it.
I found the little packet of instant potatoes at Big Lots for $1. It is one of the better instant potatoes that I have found and only requires water to make, which is perfect for busy families.
This entire one pot savory dish cost very little and would feed 6 people, which means this is a perfect meal and easy way to feed the whole family. Since I already had some cooked ground beef, it took very little time to prepare.
If you want to make the traditional recipe, you need a different type of meat like ground lamb, or if you don’t like red meat, you can use ground turkey.
So, without further ado, here’s Susan with your recipe:

Hi, my name is Susan and I am a mother of four and a grandmother to 5 and that, along with my husband and 2 dogs, take up my most of my time. I am a side-tracked Home Executive and I had the privilege of being a stay –at-home mom so, you might say that my passion is the home and making a haven for those I love. I am quite skilled at shopping 🙂 and finding a bargain just makes my day.

By sheer coincidence, my daughter has informed me that when she comes home from university for the holidays, she wants me to make Cottage Pie (Shepherd’s Pie is made with lamb, Cottage Pie is made with beef). So now I have an easy recipe! YAY! Thanks!
Does this recipe really only require 1/2 lb ground beef? Also, any suggestions for what to use instead of the Goya seasoning – I’ve never seen that in my local grocery.
I suggest browning the meat before putting it in the slow cooker if you have time – it creates more depth of flavor. Also, I’ll probably use homemade mashed potatoes because my kids don’t like instant (so I make them peel the potatoes – seems to be a fair tradeoff!) Last but not least, if you shove this under the broiler for a couple minutes at the end, the potatoes will get nice and brown and tasty.

Ellen,
Glad your daughter is going to visit, we have to cherish all these times!
I only use 1/2 pound but of course you can add more if you prefer.
For the Goya substitute, another readers said they use Paula Deen House Seasoning.
Any seasoning that your family prefers will work, though.
Here is a blend that comes close that you can make at home:
3 Tablespoons garlic powder
2 Tablespoons salt
2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano (I grow this in my garden and love it!)
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
(optional) pinch of cumin
I hope that helps!
