Healthy Eating on a Budget: Tips and Tricks for Grocery Shopping

These tips will help if you’re looking for the best ways to save money on groceries and make smart food choices.

Let’s start!

1. Plan Ahead

It’s almost impossible to not look at the all the well placed displays in grocery stores, but it makes you want to impulse buy and spend more.

With a grocery list and a meal plan for the week. You can go in, get it done and get out without taking your time trying to decide what you want to get and having to see and possibly be drawn to those displays.

2. Shop With a List

If you hate throwing out food that’s gone bad, creating a grocery list can help you shop more efficiently and reduce your food waste.

Check your pantry before heading out to the store, and make sure you have foods like olive oil, peanut butter, black beans, and other necessities you wouldn’t buy every week.

3. Don’t Shop When You’re Hungry

We’ve been told this for years but, it really is true. Being hungry when grocery shopping can significantly raise your impulse buys.

You could purchase unnecessary food or fill your basket up with junk food. Instead, go shopping after a meal or take a healthy snack.

4. Buy Fruits and Vegetables in Season

Fresh produce like fruits and vegetables are nutrient-rich and promote better health. However, these fresh foods can sometimes be expensive, especially when they’re at their peak of ripeness, affecting your grocery budget.

So here’s a helpful tip, buy fresh fruits and vegetables in season. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also know your family is getting the healthiest meals available.

5. Buy Meat and Cereals in Bulk

Buying meats in large quantities can greatly lower your grocery bill. I buy larger amounts of meats especially when they’re on sale and cut them into smaller portions and freeze them using my FoodSaver to make sure they don’t get freezer burned. By doing this, you could spend less on expensive cuts of meat, and save more money for other things.

6. Read Nutrition Facts Labels

Always check nutritional facts labels even for items you believe are healthy. Compare food labels and choose the product that contains the least salt, saturated fat, and added sugars for a healthier lifestyle.

7. Limit Your Processed Food Purchases

Processed foods are convenient, you don’t need much time to prepare them, and compared to unprocessed foods, they have a longer shelf life and are also low-cost meals.

However, we KNOW they aren’t a healthy choice, especially if you’re trying to live a healthier lifestyle.

Shop Smart to Live Healthy

The healthiest foods are not always the most expensive items from well-known brands. Generally, healthy foods have the nutrients your body needs to maintain good health. With these tips, you can have more healthy options while spending less money.

You have to be careful with your healthy food choices. As much as possible, include nutritious foods like salad greens in your healthy meals to keep a balanced diet.
