My Dr Pepper Care Package

We’ve mentioned a couple times on this blog how my lovely wife and I have suddenly found ourselves to be empty nesters.  I mean, we saw it coming but we were never really prepared for the shock of the youngest moving out and starting his new adult life.  Fortunately, he only moved about 10 minutes away to be near the UTA campus so he is close enough that we can drop little care packages on him.

All those Delicious Goodies!

When it comes to the youngest, there is only one thing he is really interested in getting, Dr Pepper.  I swear this kid could live off nothing but Dr Pepper when he was growing up.  We used to joke that he was more Dr Pepper than boy.

And of course, we had to get him some Sour Cream and Onion Pringles also.  Pringles was the chip of choice in the Farmer household but he could never get the coveted green can because that was my favorite.  He could have all the pizza or pickle flavored he wanted but hands off the Sour Cream and Onion.  I figured it was only fitting that we get him some Sour Cream and Onion Pringles now that he didn’t have to fight his Dad for them.

Find Dr Pepper at Walmart!

You can find Dr Pepper with the other soft drinks at your local Walmart.  If you want to make your own care package, the most important thing is to know what your kid likes.  Do they love candy? Salty chips?  Whatever it is, be sure you are bringing them something they really enjoy.

Did you know you could win $20,000 in college tuition from Dr Pepper?  Starting August 28th, you can play a digital football toss game (similar to the real thing at football conference champ game half time) for a chance to win $20,000 in tuition (can be used to pay off student loans!). Dr Pepper will be giving away :fr: prizes as well as an additional $5,000 in tuition to one lucky winner in each market, in select markets at Walmart locations.  Just click here for your chance to #WinTuition!

Dr Pepper is an official sponsor of the College Football Playoff and presents The National Championship Trophy at the end of the year.  While I know UTA is not in any danger of actually winning the trophy, I hope my son will take the opportunity to attend a few games and catch the “college spirit”.

All my Son's Worldly Possessions

This, a laptop and a TV is all my son’s worldly possessions right now.  Let’s just say that a care package of Dr Pepper and Pringles were greatly appreciated.  He’s never been into Dr Pepper’s other flavors but you might like to know how many different varieties of Dr Pepper there are.

Molly wants a Pringle!

Whenever we visit him, we try to take along his dog as well.  She’s too big to live with him but misses him terribly.  As my son was snacking and talking to us, Molly decided she deserved Pringles also.  I’m not sure why she sat like that but she really wanted that Pringle!

Budgeting Tutorial

One of the main things I spent time with my son on before he moved out was his budget and how to handle his money.  I made it clear to him that success or failure is totally dependent on what you do with your money.  We set up a very simple tool to help him budget.

1.  The first thing we did was set up a Google Spreadsheet for his plan.  This worked well because we could both look at the same document because it was shared with me and I could hold him accountable.

2.  We kept it very simple with a a set of columns for expenses labeled “Expense”, “Date Due”, “Amount Expected”, and “Amount Paid” and a set of Income columns with “Pay Day Date”, “Amount Expected”, “Amount Received”

3.  Then he was able to start each month out with a clear idea of where his money would be going and everything that needed to be paid.  He could also see any potential shortfalls coming or if he was going to be able to put something away in savings.

So that’s my visit to my son’s new apartment.  You can be sure I’m going to make him enter to #WinTuition because I would love to not have to pay for his College!  What would you do if you $20,000 towards your College tuition on student debt?  Let me know in the comments!
