Quick & Easy Homemade Guacamole Recipe
I love Guacamole, I could eat Hubby’s Guacamole for a meal! We have a restaurant we like to go to that makes their Guacamole tableside. So, Hubby asked for the ingredients and he’s been making it for years.
I have been begging him to make it and take pics and write it up for me to share and he finally did! But before I share the recipe, here are some interesting facts about this much enjoyed treat.
The Origin Of Guacamole
In the US alone, over 2 billion pounds of avocados are consumed annually. Much of this supply goes into making this famous dip. But really, guacamole comes from Mexico, where avocados are naturally cultivated for years. The name of the dish comes from two Aztec Nahuatl words for avocado (ahuacatl) and sauce (molli).
Making Guacamole
Perhaps one of the reasons why people enjoy guacamole is that it is so easy to make. You just need to make sure you have all the ingredients that you need so you can make the dip. Here are the ingredients that you need:
- Avocados – Go for ripe ones
- Jalapeno – Another alternative is serrano pepper
- Cilantro – You can always skip this if you’re part of the 14% of the population who hate cilantro (some people think it tastes like soap)
- Tomatoes – Some don’t add them so feel free to leave out or add them
- Lime Juice – Go for freshly squeezed
- Red Onion – If you prefer a milder taste, rinse and drain onions in water before adding to the bowl
- Sea Salt – This draws out the flavors from everything above
Cutting An Avocado
You’ll be surprised to know that not too many people know how to cut an avocado. But once you know how to do it, you won’t forget how to cut an avocado again.
All you need to do is cut the avocado in half lengthwise using a sharp knife. Once you’ve cut it around, just simply twist apart the two sides. One of those sides will contain the pit. You can remove the pit with your knife by hitting it so that it sticks to your knife, or by using your fingers or a spoon to scoop out the pit.
After that’s been removed, you’re all ready to cut up the avocado into huge chunks. You’ll then need a spoon to scoop out these chunks.
Other Ingredients You May Add
Some people love to customize their guacamole by adding in other ingredients they feel would add to the taste of the dip. If you’re looking to create a unique taste for your guacamole dip, here are some other ingredients that you can include:
- Bacon/Chorizo
- Cheese: Any soft cheese
- Chopped Nuts: Cashews, almonds, pepitas, etc.
- Fruits: Pineapple, berries, mangoes, apple, peaches, pomegranate, etc.
- Greek Yogurt/ Sour Cream
- Seasoning: Some use Everything Bagel seasoning. Hubby uses Garlic Powder
Other Ways To Enjoy Guacamole
The most common way to enjoy guacamole is as a dip. It’s a great dip for chips and nachos, which are enjoyable on any given day.
But there are also some other ways you can enjoy guacamole, especially if you don’t have any chips.
Some suggestions include using it as a topping or a side dish for the following:
- Enchiladas
- Oven-baked chicken
- Grilled salmon
- Tacos
- Baked potato
- Quesadillas
You can even mix a serving of guacamole into your deviled eggs or tuna sandwich.
Guacamole Proper Storage
It’s always best to eat guacamole right after it’s prepared. But in cases where you made too much, you should always store it so you can have a batch waiting for you whenever you want it.
One thing you have to remember about avocados is that once they’ve been cut, they quickly oxidize and turn brown. Thanks to the lime juice that you add in your guacamole, this slows down that process and you don’t have to worry about your guacamole turning brown. Just remember to store your guacamole properly in your fridge.
The trick to properly storing guacamole is to make sure air does not get to it. You’ll need to transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to three days.
So, here you go!
