Walmart has made an important hire in their ongoing fight to make Amazon have to pay state sales tax. The have hired Terry Nelson (who has a long history of fighting dirty) as a strategist for the Alliance for Main Street Fairness, a lobbying group dedicated to making online retailers have to pay tax. More on this as it develops.

Do you mean Amazon would have to collect the tax? Amazon would not being paying the sales tax either way. The consumer pays the sales tax. Also as it stands right now consumers do not get out of paying the sales tax just because they buy from Amazon. The consumer is supposed to pay the state directly under the Use Tax laws.

Amanda » Under the laws that the state wants to pass, Amazon would have to collect and pay sales tax on every item sold in a given state through an affiliate. Rather than mess with that, Amazon has revoked affiliate licences for states that have passed these laws.
