Alexander Maclaren Study Bible Review
So, I got the new Alexander Maclaren Study Bible sent to me, and I was honestly excited to check it out. I love a good study Bible – but let’s be real, some of them feel overwhelming, to say the least. You flip a page and there are so many notes and things to research and look up, you forget what you were even reading.
This one is different. It’s not overstuffed, but it still gives you plenty of notes.

What I Liked About It
Here’s what stood out to me: the notes feel personal. They don’t read like a sermon or lecture. They’re short, clear, and they always circle back to Christ and how what you’re reading can be applied to your everyday life.
I also liked the outlines. The outlines break it down so you don’t get lost.
And there are a lot of extras included, like:
- 1,400 study notes that touch every chapter of the Bible
- 380 “Christ Connection” notes that point to Jesus in every book
- 380 Life Application notes that bring it into your daily life
- 209 Passage Outlines from Maclaren’s sermons
- 8 essays on big Bible doctrines and how to apply them
- Plus concordance, cross-references, book introductions, and bottom-of-page notes
Basically, it feels very usable without being overwhelming – and that’s the sign of a great study Bible, imo.
Who Was Alexander Maclaren?
Quick background: Maclaren pastored Union Chapel in Manchester, England, from 1858–1903. His published sermons were so respected they rivaled Charles Spurgeon’s, and his teaching style was known for being clear and practical. That’s why his work still resonates today.

Final Thoughts
For me, the Alexander Maclaren Study Bible is one of those Bibles you actually want to use. It gives you insight, but it doesn’t overwhelm you. It points you back to Christ again and again. That’s why I liked it, and that’s why I think it’s worth purchasing.
