EcoScraps Review and $50 Walmart Giftcard Giveaway!

Those of you that follow this blog regularly have probably heard me talking from time to time about the changes my wife Dian and I have made to how and what we eat.  When we were raising 4 kids, getting food as cheaply as possible was a survival skill.  We had to learn about couponing or we were all going to starve.

Now that the kids are grown and out of the house and it’s just us and the dog, we were able to take a breath and really look at what we were eating.  What we quickly realized is that we really didn’t know what quality food was.  All we knew was that I was sitting at about 400 lbs and something needed to change and change fast.

I probably spent 2 years reading every single book and watching every YouTube video I could get me hands on that talked about food and how different foods effected our bodies.  The one thing that was incredibly clear to me was that if I was ever going to drop the weight and get healthy, I was going to have to cut out the sugar and carbs and start eating healthier whole foods.  In fact, you can follow along at My Sugar Free Journey, my other blog that just talks about food and what food does to our bodies.

The second thing that became clear was that food not only effected out bodies in different ways but growing and preparing food also had different effects on the environment depending on how you did it.  The documentary Food Inc really opened my eyes to the ways that different agricultural processes have different effects on the world around us and planted the idea within me that I would like to at least attempt to start growing a little of my own food.  If nothing else it would give me an appreciation for how much time and effort goes into making the food on my plate every day.

So as all of that was swirling through my head, Ecoscraps reached out to me and told me that their potting soil products were available in Walmart stores across the country as their preferred distributer and would I like to create a partnership with them and tell my readers about their awesome soil products.  I replied that I didn’t just want to tell people about their products, I wanted to use them for myself; build my own garden and let me readers see for themselves how we could all grow some of our own food.  In fact, you can already see a lot of what I’m doing on my InstaGram account.

Once I started looking at the type of company that EcoScraps is, I could not have been happier with my choice to partner with this incredible company.  In the United States, we waste 40% of the food produced. That is enough to fill the Rose Bowl every day and it just sits in landfills producing methane, which is 20X more harmful than CO2.  What EcoScraps does is it takes food waste and recycles it into potting soil and plant food.  Between 2011 and 2015, EcoScraps recycled 75 million lbs of food waste. They are matching that number in 2016 with projected recycling of another 75 million lbs of food waste–this time in just 12 months.  Those are staggering numbers when you consider that recycling 15 million lbs of food waste is equivalent to keeping 500,000 cars off the road for an entire day.

Check out this short video that highlights what they are about.
