Something a little bizarre (and non-Walmart related) happened to me the other day and the more I’ve thought about it, the more I wanted to share it with you guys.
I’ve been remodeling a bathroom for a client (I have a Home Repair business I run when I’m not blogging) and there is a little Greek restaurant around the corner. I really like Greek food but I’ve been avoiding eating there because I ate there a long time ago and didn’t like it. Here’s the thing, I couldn’t remember WHY I didn’t like it. I just had a vague sense that I didn’t like it the last time I ate there.
I decided to give it another try because I was hungry and I still like Greek food. I ordered a Gyro and when they brought it out I thought I remembered why I didn’t like it. They brought out this Gyro that was just meat and pita bread (although I have to admit, the meat was very good) and served it on a bed of Ruffles. That’s right, Ruffles potato chips. No hummus, no greek salad, no rice, just Ruffles.
I thought, “Ok, this is clearly why I didn’t like this place. No big deal, just eat and go and never come back.” It was only after I went to the register to pay that I realized the REAL reason I didn’t like it. I handed her my card and she just handed it right back to me and said, “We don’t accept Credit Cards, cash or check only.”
Cash or check only? In the 21st century? How is this even possible?
I explained to her that I didn’t have any cash and she very helpfully informed me that they would gladly take a check. A check? You will take a check? I’ll just go hop in my time machine to 20 years ago when I actually owned a checkbook and write one out for you. I hope I can remember how!
I ended up having to drive to a convenience store, get some cash out at the ATM and drive back. Grumbling the whole way, mind you.
Has this ever happened to you? Are there any small businesses around you that don’t accept credit cards? How is this even still a thing?
