Is your home feeling cluttered, but you can’t quite figure out why? It might be because of all the invisible clutter that’s piling up in places you don’t even think about.

It’s easy to focus on the stuff we can see—clothes lying around, toys on the floor—but what about the things your eyes don’t immediately gravitate toward?

Things like disorganized drawers, that pile of paperwork you keep meaning to sort, or the clutter hidden in cabinets? Things you become so used to looking at you just overlook them.

Invisible clutter might not be easily visible at first glance, but trust me, it’s there—and it’s probably stressing you out more than you realize.

The “Invisible Clutter” in Your Home That’s Stressing You Out (And How to Fix It)

Let’s break down what invisible clutter is, where it hides, and how you can finally tackle it so your home feels lighter, more organized, and, most importantly, stress-free.

1. Your Overstuffed Drawers

You know the ones. The junk drawer in the kitchen, the drawer that holds your old receipts, or the one with random batteries, rubber bands, and paperclips.

In my house it’s my husband’s dresser drawers – always overflowing and never able to close, all filled with things he never wears but can’t part with…

While it may seem harmless, all this clutter is still taking up mental space. Every time you open that drawer, your brain processes the mess, which can contribute to stress.

Here’s the fix:

Set aside 10 minutes today to organize one drawer. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter it makes you feel.

2. The Piles of Paperwork

Bills, receipts, kids’ schoolwork—paperwork has a sneaky way of multiplying. It piles up and before you know it, your countertops or dining table are covered.

The fix?

Set up a quick system for sorting through your mail as soon as it comes in. Try a “to-do,” “to-file,” and “to-shred” basket. It’ll take you less than five minutes every day and keep the paper piles under control.

3. Underutilized Storage Spaces

The cabinets, closets, and baskets where we stash things and forget about them. Sure, it’s out of sight, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still causing you stress.

Here’s an easy fix:

Take 20 minutes and go through one of your underused storage spaces. Take inventory of what’s in there, get rid of things you don’t need, and organize what’s left.

4. The Digital Clutter

Don’t forget about the invisible clutter that’s lurking in your phone, computer, and email inbox. Old files, photos, emails, and apps you don’t use anymore all create invisible mental clutter.

Take some time this week to delete or organize your digital space. Trust me, it feels just as good as tidying up a physical space.

5. Unfinished Projects

Whether it’s that DIY project you started last year or the sewing kit you never quite finished, unfinished projects create a sense of clutter in your mind.

They’re little mental reminders of something left undone. If possible, try to wrap them up or set a timeline for completion. If you’re not going to finish them, consider letting go.

By getting rid of invisible clutter, you’ll free up more space (and mental energy) to enjoy your home. It’s easier than you think, and the best part? You can start with just one thing today and feel that weight lifting right away.

Struggling with clutter but can't pinpoint the cause? Learn about the invisible clutter in your home that's stressing you out—and how to tackle it with simple, easy fixes to create a more peaceful, organized space.
