I don’t know about you, but I love to save money and I am happy to save money any time that I can! We can all use a little bit of help with our budget, couldn’t we?

Unlocking the Art of Haggling

Have you ever been to a bustling market where vendors are calling out prices, and the air is thick with the excitement of negotiation?

It’s like an adrenaline rush, a dance between buyer and seller. But what if I told you that this thrill doesn’t have to be confined to the corners of street markets and tourist bazaars?

I remember a time when I needed several items to help rebuild a pc and some people told us about this nighttime market. It was in downtown Dallas – once a month at midnight… that didn’t sound sketchy at all! lol All i could think of was M*A*S*H and the black market they called “Little Tokyo”.

My husband and some workmates that had been there before all came with us and it was crazy – there were tons of vendors with every computer part you could image set up at tables outside on the street.

This was one of those times that haggling came in very handy and we got everything we needed and more for great prices.

Back to the tips! What if I revealed to you surprising places where you can haggle prices and unlock savings you never thought possible? Get ready to tap into the art of Haggling!

Surprising Savings at Services

When it comes to services, many people assume that the price is fixed and non-negotiable. But let me tell you, my friend, you have far more power than you realize.

From home repairs to car maintenance, there are unexpected opportunities to flex your haggling muscles and save some serious cash.

Take home repairs, for example. Whether you’re looking to fix that leaky faucet or get some electrical work done, it’s always worth negotiating a better price.

Find reputable service providers in your area and request multiple quotes. Once you have a few options, play them off against each other by letting them know about the competitors’ lower prices.

Trust me, businesses are often willing to negotiate to secure your business, especially in a competitive market. Don’t be afraid to walk away if their initial offer doesn’t meet your expectations – sometimes, they’ll come back with a better deal to keep you as a customer.

Phone/Cable/Insurance Companies

Utilities such as phone and internet as well as our insurance bills are among some of our biggest expenses every month, wouldn’t it be great to cut down on those costs? Why not ask?

That’s right, you can call into these providers and ask them for a reduced rate. Sometimes they can find you discounts, or offer you current promotional deals. You won’t know until you ask!

I do this all the time – just make sure that you mark on the calendar when to call back in if they give you a “limited time offer”. Once our electric bill SKYROCKETED and when we asked why we were told our “plan” had expired and it defaulted to the highest they offered.

So keep a calendar and call in ahead of time and negotiate another deal before the one you’re on expires. If they don’t want to give you a new deal sometimes threatening to change companies works well, I have done that with the phone, cable, and internet.

Department Stores

So this may not fall under the typical “haggling prices” definition, but the next time you’re shopping at a major department store, ask the cashier if there are any discounts you might be able to get. Often there are deals out there that you just might not be aware of.

Additionally, if the stores that you’re shopping in have salespeople that work on commission another great tactic that will help you get the price of the item down is to simply ask them to call you when the price goes down or it goes on sale. The salesperson will often either do just that, or they may have the authority to offer you an early sales price now.

Story Time: lol I remember being pregnant with my first and I had my eye on a rocking chair in a store window downtown. I had that in my mind it was the exact one I really wanted. I couldn’t afford it. My parents came to visit and we were walking around downtown and I showed it to them.

My Dad walked in the store – haggled with the owner – and walked out with “my” chair for almost 1/2 off! I was amazed. So, what does it hurt to try? A “no” never hurt anyone!

Landlord

Do you rent? Did you know that you may be able to haggle on the price of your rent or the costs associated with it?

Here’s how: If you’re a new renter, you may be able to ask for a reduction in move in fees, or maybe if they’re willing to include utilities in your rent.

If you are a long term tenant facing a rent increase, you can ask for a lower increase in exchange for a longer lease, etc. If you have been a good tenant, you may get the response you are hoping for.

My daughter has haggled with landlords to get lower or no deposits because she offers to paint or do some sort of renovation in exchange for the deposit. So, think outside the box!

The Doctor’s Office

Not a lot of people know this, but you can almost always negotiate the price of your medical services. You might find success haggling the price of these services by asking the billing department if there is a cash discount, or if they perhaps offer a long term 0% interest payment plans.

The same goes for prescriptions – not so much haggling but, most prescription companies offer a way for people to get their meds when they can’t afford it.

I talk about my experience with that here: Savings On Prescriptions. I was able to get an expensive drug I needed for free from the company, they sent me new like clockwork without me having to ask.

Vacation Rentals

Are you planning a vacation soon? If you plan to rent a vacation house, you might be in a little bit of sticker shock at the price of the fees that go along with renting a vacation home.

If you’re looking to spend less, consider asking if they’ll waive the cleaning fee in exchange for you doing the cleaning yourself. I’ve found that this works better when homeowners do the renting themselves, but you can always ask rental agencies as well.

Everyday Haggling Heroes

Now that we’ve explored the art of haggling, let’s think about everyday situations where you can flex your haggling muscles and emerge as a victorious negotiator.

Don’t forget about your monthly bills. Whether it’s your:

  • cable
  • internet
  • insurance
  • gym
  • phone
  • electricity (in some places – in Texas we can change)

there’s often room for negotiation.

Rather than accepting the renewal notice or the initial sign-up price, be proactive and call to ask if there are any promotions or discounts available.

Loyalty is valuable to companies, and they would rather keep you as a customer at a lower rate than lose you altogether.

Remember to be polite, patient, and persistent – it may take a few tries, but your efforts will pay off.

Don’t forget what your grandmother taught you: “You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar”…

As we conclude this eye-opening journey into the world of haggling, I want you to remember one thing—your power lies within!

Harness it, believe in it, and dare to negotiate fearlessly. From technology to travel, from cars to collectibles, and beyond, don’t shy away from exploring the unexpected.

Opportunities to haggle and save await you in the most unlikely places. So, go ahead, embrace the challenge, and let your bargaining skills shine bright.

Trust me, you have the potential to unlock incredible discounts and secure the deals of a lifetime!

Uncover hidden opportunities to negotiate prices and save money. Learn where to haggle unexpectedly and maximize your savings.
