Dollar Tree Penny Items: Do They Exist?

in Dollar Tree, Instagram, Saving Money Tips, Store Savings Guides on 10/22/25

If you’ve ever seen someone on TikTok or Facebook claim they “found penny items at Dollar Tree,” you’ve probably wondered if it’s real. After all, Dollar Tree is already the king of cheap – how much lower can you go than $1.25?

The Rumor That Keeps Circulating

Turns out, those viral videos usually come from a mix-up with other stores’ clearance systems. Retailers like Home Depot, Dollar General, and even Walgreens have “penny item” policies where certain products hit a final markdown before being pulled from shelves.

Dollar Tree doesn’t really work that way. In fact, if a store employee sells you an item for a penny – that is a can get them fired according to Dollar Tree company policy:

  • Company policy: Dollar Tree’s policy requires that “penny” items be pulled from the sales floor and destroyed. They are not for sale.
  • Consequences for employees: Selling a penny item is a violation of company policy. Employees can be fired for it, even if a manager told them to sell it.
  • Reasons for “pennies”: Items are sometimes marked with a penny price internally to indicate they should be discontinued, written off, or destroyed due to being out of season, discontinued, or having a SKU change. In some cases, this is done for inventory tracking, and in rare cases, it could be for safety reasons.
  • Legality: While it’s not a criminal act, the store has the right to deny the sale because it goes against their internal policies and procedures.

So, What Really Happens at Dollar Tree

Instead of hidden penny deals, Dollar Tree’s markdowns happen in predictable ways:

  • Seasonal clearance – right after holidays, décor, and party supplies can drop to 50% or 75% off.
  • Discontinued stock – when packaging changes or products are replaced, they’re sometimes marked down to make space.
  • Dollar Tree Plus! sections – these sometimes mark down higher-priced items ($3–$5 range), but not to a penny.

So while you won’t find literal “penny items,” you can score major markdowns if you know when to shop.

When to Check for Markdowns

The best time to hunt clearance deals at Dollar Tree is right after any major holiday.

Think:

  • After Christmas for gift wrap, ornaments, and lights.
  • After Valentine’s Day for candy and décor.
  • After back-to-school season for notebooks and supplies.
  • After any holiday: When my kids were in college I would go after any holiday and buy tons of fun candy and send them boxfuls! They and their dorm loved it!

These markdowns are usually handled manually by staff – so timing and luck play a big role.

How to Spot Real Deals at Dollar Tree

  • Look for handwritten shelf tags. Regular tags are green and white, but clearance ones often have orange stickers or temporary paper tags.
  • Check the bottom shelves. Staff often stash older inventory lower when new stock arrives.
  • Ask employees politely. Some stores discount overstock locally, and a friendly question never hurts.

If Penny Shopping’s Your Thing…

If you love the thrill of finding those secret markdowns, you’ll want to check out how other stores do it – especially Home Depot. They actually do have penny items, and it’s wild once you know what to look for.
