With more than 2,800 grocery stores across the United States, Kroger is one of the largest supermarket chains (second only to Walmart) in the country.

If you’re not familiar with Kroger, you might be familiar with its affiliate stores: Fred Meyers, City Market, King Scoopers, Harris Teeter, Dillons, Ralphs, and/or Smith’s.

Kroger Shopping Tips And Tricks For Saving

Another reason a lot of people are shopping at Kroger is their promotions and programs. These promos can help you save money not only on essentials, but also everyday groceries.

While the prices are already low for shoppers, if you want to save even more money, here are some secret savings tips that you should apply to make the most out of every Kroger shopping trip you make.

1. Kroger Plus Card

It pays to be a member.

And the best part of being a Kroger Plus shopper’s card holder? This membership program offers members digital coupons as well as personalized deals. It’s FREE, and it will only take you a few minutes to signup.

You can do this at the customer service desk at any of your local Kroger family of stores.

If you don’t have your Kroger card with you, you can also use your online account and digital membership to store your coupons, by using your Kroger Plus card number or alternate id . So you can still get your in-store discounts.

Just download the Kroger app (which is also free). Everything that you need is in the app, so the next time you shop, bring your phone or mobile device with you. All you need to sign up for your new Kroger account is your email address and your zip code to find your store.

In the app, you can also set up your Kroger co. mobile wallets with Kroger pay.

2. Free Friday Download

On the first Friday of every month, Kroger offers a FREE Friday download.

Each month, you can score one product for free.

All you need to do is to clip the coupon to your Kroger Plus Card.

This coupon can only be claimed every first Friday, but once you clip it, it’s good for use for a few weeks.

3. Stay Current

When you sign up for a Kroger rewards account, make sure that all your information is correct.

The more you use your store cards, the more personalized coupons will be sent to you via snail mail, so make sure to keep your address and phone number current.

For instance when using your rewards cards if you purchase a certain store brand of milk or butter or a name brand cheese often, you will see those types of coupons in the mailing.

I have seen people get diaper coupons, coffee, tea, meat, produce and what you get is all based on what you purchase when using your Kroger Plus Card.

4. Buy 1 Get 1 FREE Coupons

The Buy 1, Get 1 deals differ from one store to another.

With some stores, you can buy an item for its full price and then the second one is $0.00. However, with Kroger, they ring up each one for half price. It’s the same savings but, it allows you to use a coupon on each item rather than just on the one you paid for, like other stores do.

Let’s say you’re buying bread which is buy one get one free and the bread is $2 each and you use two $0.50 coupons. You can use one on each loaf, and you will be charged $1 for two loaves of bread. Not a bad deal.

5. Get Your Seafood Seasoned And Ready To Cook

Having an all out seafood dinner has never been easier

You can get a fresh and wide variety of seafood at Kroger.

And the best part? You can choose from a range of garnishes and seasonings to add to your order at no extra charge.

Plus, Kroger will also place your fish fillet or shrimp in an oven-safe bag complete with baking instructions so once you’re ready, all you need to do is pop it in the oven, cook the veggies, and lunch or dinner is ready.

6. Fuel Rewards

Every time you shop at Kroger, make sure you take advantage of their Fuel Rewards Program. You can redeem them at your local Kroger family fuel centers.

With the Kroger rewards program, every dollar you spend will get you 1 point. You can get anywhere from $0.10 up to $1.00 off every gallon of gas in exchange for your fuel points for a gas discount.

You can use your rewards points for a fuel discount on your gas purchases at any local Kroger fuel centers. They do expirer at the end of every single month.

You can also get 2x the fuel reward gas points when you purchase gift cards at Kroger. Plus, during special promotions, you might even get up to 4x the fuel rewards for every gift card purchase!

7. Free Pick Up

No time to run a quick errand?

Many Kroger chains offer FREE pickup on your first three orders.

All you have to do is choose your items online, reserve a pickup or shipping window, then add your payment information.

Once you choose to pick up your items, all you need to do is go to your local Kroger grocery store, call the number on the sign at your pickup location, and a store employee will bring out your order.

8. 10 For $10 Promotions

A lot of Kroger stores offer 10 for $10 promotions.

If you don’t want to buy all 10 items, don’t worry, as long as you are using your club card, Kroger will still honor the $1 for every item.

The promotion 10 for $10 is just to entice people to buy 10. But the truth is it just means the item is $1 each – so the sign could read 2 for $2 or 4 for $4 or 50 for $50, all it means is the item is $1. Keep that in mind when you see these promotions.

9. Rebate Apps

There are several rebate apps you can use every time you shop at Kroger.

What’s even better is that you can save even more by buying an item on sale and then getting cash back on top of the sale price. That’s a win-win!

10. Checkout Coupons

Have you heard of Catalinas or checkout coupons?

When you purchase certain items in specific quantities, you can earn these coupons.

Be on the lookout for a red tag underneath a red or yellow sale price. This will indicate that the item you are about to purchase will give you a Catalina deal after your purchase. You can then use this coupon on your next shopping trip.

11. Markdowns On Meat And Bakery

You’ll never pay full price again

If you’re buying meat or bakery items, look for the “Manager’s Special” or “Woohoo” tags.

This means that the item you are purchasing is priced at a bargain as it’s near its sell-by date.

Also, be sure to check what I refer to as the “cheap meat” section. Every store has one and check the prices and selection there before buying. One step further, ask your butcher when he adds to that section and make sure to shop on those days and times to get first pick.

12. Buy Generic

There are more than 10,000 quality private label items available at Kroger. Compared with other national brands, these items are manufactured and being sold at a good discount.

Here are some of the Kroger-brand products that you might want to try:

  • Fresh Selections
  • Big K
  • Kroger
  • Comforts for Baby
  • Simple Truth
  • P$$T
  • Pet Pride
  • Home Sense

13. Kroger Credit Card

Do you want to get free groceries?

If you use your 1-2-3 REWARDS Visa card every time you shop at Kroger, you can earn reward points which will entitle you to free groceries.

Plus, this card has no annual fees!

The cardholders also receive coupons and bonus rewards they can use exclusively at Kroger.

With its abundant item selection and great prices, it’s no wonder a lot of people are shopping at Kroger these days. But you can save a little more by using these tips.
